The Crown of Stolen Suns

The night before the coronation

For fifteen years, the kingdom of Auravelle has had no king. Only a Regent, Lord Aldric Voss, and an empty cushion where the Crown of Stolen Suns should be.

A month ago, the crown came back. Nobody knows who returned it. The servants started whispering about a drowned boy. Wet little footprints. Marigolds where no one walked.

Tonight the moon rose red. At two minutes past midnight, the chapel bell rang like a madman, then stopped. The Regent was found dead, a letter crushed in his fist, and two words traced in the ash beside him: THE BOY.

The gates are shut. You and your friends are the Royal Inquiry. Find the killer before dawn.

One of you already knows who did it.

How a party works

01

Buy one party

US$29 with PayPal. Your party link arrives straight away, and by email.

02

Send the link

Friends open it on their phones and pick a nickname. No accounts, no downloads.

03

Deal the secrets

When you're together, tap Start. Everyone gets a secret character. One of you gets the worst secret of all.

04

Talk. Accuse. Survive.

Three rounds, one royal question each, then the final vote. You tap your answers, never type. About an hour, start to finish.

What you'll need

  • 4–8 people, you included.
  • A phone each, with a web browser and internet.
  • One room. It's built for a table full of people talking over each other.
  • One phone with the sound on. That's plenty.
  • About an hour.

Nothing to print. Nothing to read beforehand. Costumes and snacks are optional, and strongly encouraged.

What makes it work

Everyone has a secret

Not just the killer. Every guest is hiding something. You may lie about your secret, but only the killer may lie about the murder.

The killer is one of you

Roles are dealt at random. One of your friends will smile at you all night and lie to your face. The game quietly coaches them.

Short on guests? The game plays them

With fewer than eight people, the missing guests are played by the game. Tap their portrait to question them, or show them a clue and watch them crack.

Spooky, not gory

Bells, whispers, a red moon and a ghost story. Think PG-13: plenty of shivers, no blood.

You never get stuck

Miss a round and the story moves on. You lose gold, not the case.

Tap, don't type

Every answer is a choice on your screen. Arguing is the hard part.

Three endings and a final envelope

Catch the killer, save the gold, or neither. Then crack the Bonus, and everyone at the table can claim a free invitation to our next mystery.

Eight guests. Eight motives.

Questions

How many people can play?

Four to eight, you included. With fewer than eight, the game plays the missing guests. A ninth friend can watch along as a spectator.

Do we need to be in the same room?

It's designed for one room, where everyone can hear each other. A video call can work if everyone has their own phone for the game, but we built it for a table.

Does everyone need to download something or sign up?

No. Everyone opens the same link in their phone's browser and picks a nickname. Only the person who pays needs an email address.

How long does it take?

About an hour, plus an optional six-minute Bonus at the end.

Does anyone have to run it or know the answer?

No. The person who buys is the organizer: they tap Start and turn the pages of the story. They play like everyone else and never see the answer.

Is it scary?

Spooky, not gory. There are bells, whispers, a ghost story and a few jumps. No blood, no gore. Think of a good ghost story told by candlelight.

Who is it for?

Grown-ups and teens. The person who buys must be 18 or older. We recommend it for players 13 and up.

What if someone has to leave?

Their character is handed to the game, and the party carries on. If someone just loses signal, they pick up where they left off when they reopen the link.

Can we play it again?

Each purchase is one party. Once you know whodunit, the mystery's solved for you, so it's best played once per group. Want to run it for a different group? Buy another party.

Do I need to prepare anything?

Charge your phones, gather your friends, turn one phone's sound on. Dressing up is optional and highly recommended.

What happens if we get stuck?

You can't really get stuck. Each round has a clock. When it runs out, the story moves on and you lose some gold, but you can still solve the case.

What's the invitation?

Crack the Bonus envelope at the end, and everyone at the table can claim a free invitation to host our next Sugar Dagger mystery. Reward terms

Can I get a refund?

Yes: within 30 days of buying, as long as your game hasn't started. Your party never expires, so if your night falls through, you can also just play it later or give it to another group. If something on our side stops your game, we'll refund you in full. Refund policy

How do I pay?

PayPal. Where PayPal allows it, you can pay by card through PayPal without an account.

Which phones work?

Any recent iPhone or Android phone with Safari or Chrome. Laptops work too.
